Architects and conservation officers typically specify one of two proven insulated limecrete floor systems. We install both — exactly to the manufacturer's specification.
Glasscrete® is the limecrete floor system by Mike Wye which uses foam glass aggregate as its insulating and moisture-managing sub-base. A modern interpretation of traditional solid floors, it comfortably meets modern insulation requirements — ensuring maximum efficiency from underfloor heating. The slab is made of natural hydraulic lime (NHL) and appropriate aggregates rather than a cement binder.
A high-quality insulating hardcore made from 99% recycled glass. Non-capillary closed cells that do not absorb water, excellent insulation values (λ = 0.08 W/mK), excellent compressive strength, A1 fire resistant, inert and pH-neutral — and quicker to install, cutting labour time and cost.
Unsympathetic, relatively impervious modern materials can push moisture into ground-level walls — resulting in poor insulation, damp floors and even structural damage. GEOCELL combines a drainage layer and insulation in a single product, dealing with ground moisture at the base of the floor and reducing the overall build-up depth.
Ty-Mawr have been designing and supplying their award-winning SubLime® insulated limecrete floor since 1999 — thousands of floors, from humble cottages to churches. The minimum build-up is 250mm: 150mm of GLAPOR foamed glass beneath a 100mm limecrete slab, suitable with or without underfloor heating.
A loosefill insulating aggregate that fulfils three critical functions in one layer: damp protection (a non-capillary wicking break), insulation (closed-cell, λ = 0.08 W/mK — depth calculated to achieve any required U-value) and structural hardcore (≥480 kPa compressive strength, with no Type 1 / MOT sub-base required below).
Polythene membranes retrofitted into existing solid-wall buildings can actually cause rising damp — trapping moisture and pushing it sideways into the masonry. The SubLime® floor manages moisture through the non-capillary foamed glass instead, keeping the whole build-up vapour-open.
Limecrete is a combination of natural hydraulic lime and lightweight aggregate which can be used as an alternative to concrete. A limecrete floor consists of a compacted layer of Recycled Foamed Glass insulation on top of prepared sub-base and geotextile membrane with a 2-1 limecrete screed. This creates a breathable floor slab with a certain amount of flex.
Limecrete is used in old and listed buildings because of its ability to deal with naturally occurring moisture. When it comes to old properties with stone floors laid directly on the earth, there is an argument that these are breathable floors — and if you are replacing them, then there is a need for limecrete.

Underfloor heating works exceptionally well with limecrete and can be laid directly in the slab or installed in the screed. We design, supply and install a wide range of underfloor heating systems, including electric and water solutions with various heat outputs to suit your requirements.
Breathable geotextile separation layers are laid above and below the foamed glass aggregate — keeping the build-up clean and separated while letting moisture vapour pass freely, unlike an impermeable DPM.
If you live in a Radon risk area, building control may insist a Radon barrier is installed within the floor build-up. We can incorporate Radon protection into a limecrete floor where required — protecting the building and its occupiers from gas ingress.
A limecrete floor deserves the right finish — flagstones, tiles, timber or polished lime surfaces that keep the build-up vapour-open. We'll advise on the best breathable finish for your property as part of our free technical advice.
Every insulated limecrete floor is built as a vapour-open sandwich — moisture is managed by the non-capillary foamed glass base rather than trapped by a plastic membrane.
The foamed glass depth is calculated to hit your target U-value, and the whole build-up is site mixed and laid by our own team. Underfloor heating sits directly in the slab or within a separate screed above.
